What is more Important – Age or Experience?

Young vs Old

It may sound like a chicken and egg situation, but I lately went to a 3-year-old company for a meeting.  This company only employed people in the age group of 20 to 30 years.  The Founders seemed clear that this age group can be coached, given targets and work faster.

Then I visited another company that had been around for 25 years and their strategy was that they vouched for people who came in with experience, not age.  It seemed like the world today is divided into 2 thought processes.  One supports age and the other experience. I visited yet another company that was around for 15 years and employed both categories of people.  Those with age and those with experience.  Apparently, they were working on a Diversity and Inclusion model to bring into the organization both, young blood with enthusiasm, excitement and knowledge along with those that brought in experience, commitment and hard work.

As per my experience :

The young have a swiftness that the experienced lack.  They have energy, bubbling ideas, are fearless and ready to move fast.  The experienced on the other hand, have practical knowledge and bring with them stability and maturity that is needed in every business.  On the flip side, the young lack commitment and are utterly temperamental in nature while the experienced become rigid, extra conservative and outdated.

I believe an organization that has a more inclusive environment that nurtures both these dynamics, have people who can set in the pace and also those that can still stay grounded.

So, which one do you think is more important?  Age or Experience?
